Damascus was the first capital of the first Islamic state and the Umayyad Mosque is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world located in one of the most sacred sites in the ancient city of Damascus, it is of great architectural importance and one of the most important for Muslims around the world. The mosque houses the shrine of John the Baptist, honored as a prophet by both Muslims and Christians. It is impossible to list all the sights of Damascus. The city is a living museum spanning thousands of years and the most important monuments in the old part of the city are: the Wall and Gates, Al Azem Palace and the Damascus Citadel.
